Most open cars ask you to give something up — the back seats, the boot, the quiet. The A5 Cabriolet is the one that does not. Four seats in beige leather, a fabric roof that disappears under the rear deck, and a cabin calm enough at freeway speed to hold a conversation with it raised. Ours wears the RS front: honeycomb grille, silver blade under the lip, silver multi-spoke wheels.

Roof up, this is a discreet dark German coupe, and the cabin is quiet enough to take a call on the 405. Roof down it becomes an entirely different car, which is the whole trick of a soft-top: two cars in one day.

For Los Angeles it is the practical open car. Malibu in the morning with the roof stowed, a dinner in Beverly Hills that evening with it up, and nobody arriving windblown for the second one.

Yes, less than with it up: the folded roof takes the top of the boot. Two soft weekend bags fit with it stowed, and a large hard case is easier with the roof raised.

Renting the Audi A5: the short answers

Can I book the Audi A5 with a driver?
Yes. A chauffeur is from $100 an hour on a two-hour minimum, added to the car at its day rate — $537 for a four-hour evening in this car. No security deposit is taken on a chauffeured booking. What do I need to rent the Audi A5, and can international guests book?
A driver of 21 or over with a licence held at least two years — between 21 and 24 a young-driver fee of $50 a day applies on this car, and under 21 is considered case by case. A major credit card in the primary renter's name for the refundable hold, and cover for the car: your own full-coverage policy if it extends to a rental, or our Protection plan arranged with the booking. International guests rent on a passport and a home-country licence; no International Driving Permit is needed. The hold is released 5–7 business days after a clean return, longer only if there is damage to price. If the age floor or the cover is the thing in the way, the same car goes out with a driver instead — that booking asks neither of you.
How far ahead should I book the Audi A5, and can I change the dates?
There is no notice period: the calendar on this page shows the days it is free, and once a booking is paid a car that is free can be on its way to you in about an hour — same day included. Any other address is priced by distance from the office, $75 one way inside 10 miles, and itemised on the quote before you pay.
How many miles are included, and can I take the Audi A5 out of California?
Every car carries its own daily mileage allowance, and yours arrives in writing with the booking confirmation, together with the per-mile rate for anything over it. The car may leave the state — Las Vegas, Arizona, up the coast — as long as you tell us the plan in advance and keep the allowance in mind; it comes home to Los Angeles, since there is no one-way drop in another city.
What does a weekend in the Audi A5 cost, and can I rent it by the hour?
$274 for two days and $411 for three, before the Protection plan, tax and any delivery — there is no separate weekend rate, and one day is the minimum on a Saturday too.
