Bronze Land Rover Defender on a fire road in the Santa Monica mountains

Better With Dust On It

Bronze Land Rover Defender

Gondwana Stone over a short, square, two-door body — the one luxury SUV in Los Angeles that improves when it gets dirty.

Every other SUV on Sunset is trying to look as though it has been somewhere. This one has.

Gondwana Stone is the warm bronze-brown Land Rover introduced with this generation of Defender, and it is the colour that makes the car look like the thing it claims to be. Set against the pale contrast panel across the lower front and the gloss-black wheels, there is nothing else on a Los Angeles road that reads like it.

01Above the Pacific in the late afternoon. The side-hinged tailgate and the upright back are the shapes the original car is remembered for.

This is the short one — two doors, one window behind each of them, and a wheelbase that stops almost as soon as the door does. It is the Defender at its most convincing: the proportions are the original car's, the overhangs are short enough to matter on a fire road, and it parks in places the long version simply does not.

On tarmac the trick is the air suspension, which takes the edge off a patched Los Angeles surface and kneels at the kerb when you stop. It is a genuinely capable car, which is more than can be said for most of what it parks next to.

Short, square and unbothered.
Nothing else looks like it.

Queries

Where can I rent a Land Rover Defender in Los Angeles?
Nizo Luxury rents the Land Rover Defender in Los Angeles — +1 (424) 303-6496. It is $329 a day; we bring it to your hotel or your home, or you collect it at no charge from our office on Robertson Boulevard.
How much does it cost to rent a Land Rover Defender in Los Angeles?
The bronze Defender is $329 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary.
Is this the short two-door Defender or the long four-door one?
The short one — two doors, with a bench behind them. It is the more characterful shape and the easier one to park. If you need four doors and a full second row for the week, tell us and we will point you at the right car in the fleet instead.
Can I actually take it off the tarmac?
It is genuinely capable rather than styled to look it, and the short overhangs help. Where you may take it is set by the rental terms rather than by the car, so tell us what you have in mind when you book and we will confirm it.
What is it like on a canyon road?
It is booked for where it can go and how it looks when it gets there; for the canyon itself, the fleet's sports cars are the day.
Can I see the dates before I call?
Yes — the diary on this page is the live fleet calendar. If a date is open there, it is open.

The terms, before you commit

Refundable deposit
$750
A hold, not a charge, and released 5–7 business days after a clean return, longer only if there is damage to price.
Protection plan
$100 a day
Priced off the deposit rather than the rate. Your own qualifying full-coverage policy takes this line out of the quote entirely.
Driver, 21–24
$50 a day
Twenty-one is the floor, with a licence held two years. The higher band applies at or above a $1,500 deposit; this car is below it.
Shortest booking
24 hours
No maximum. Delivery is complimentary at our Robertson Boulevard lot and our four Beverly Hills partner hotels; LAX is $150 both ways with the car in the airport parking structure or $300 both ways to the terminal, half that for one direction.

This one is the same rate at every length — it carries no multi-day block, so three days is three times one day.

Renting the Land Rover Defender: the short answers

Can I book the Land Rover Defender with a driver?
Yes. A chauffeur is from $100 an hour on a two-hour minimum, added to the car at its day rate — $729 for a four-hour evening in this car. No security deposit is taken on a chauffeured booking. The same car can be driven to the event and yours with the keys the morning after; the chauffeur service page has the runs and the hours.
What do I need to rent the Land Rover Defender, and can international guests book?
A driver of 21 or over with a licence held at least two years — between 21 and 24 a young-driver fee of $50 a day applies on this car, and under 21 is considered case by case. A major credit card in the primary renter's name for the refundable hold, and cover for the car: your own full-coverage policy if it extends to a rental, or our Protection plan arranged with the booking. International guests rent on a passport and a home-country licence; no International Driving Permit is needed. The hold is released 5–7 business days after a clean return, longer only if there is damage to price. If the age floor or the cover is the thing in the way, the same car goes out with a driver instead — that booking asks neither of you.
How far ahead should I book the Land Rover Defender, and can I change the dates?
There is no notice period: the calendar on this page shows the days it is free, and once a booking is paid a car that is free can be on its way to you in about an hour — same day included. Moving the dates is free, as often as you need, outside the last day before the start; a change inside it keeps one day's rate. What comes back if you cancel is set out in our terms and conditions.
Can the Land Rover Defender be delivered to my hotel, my home or LAX?
Yes. Delivery is complimentary to the Beverly Wilshire, the Four Seasons at Doheny, L’Ermitage and the Maybourne, and collection from our Robertson Boulevard office costs nothing. LAX is $150 both ways with the car in the airport parking structure or $300 both ways to the terminal, half that for one direction. Any other address is priced by distance from the office, $75 one way inside 10 miles, and itemised on the quote before you pay.
How many miles are included, and can I take the Land Rover Defender out of California?
Every car carries its own daily mileage allowance, and yours arrives in writing with the booking confirmation, together with the per-mile rate for anything over it. The car may leave the state — Las Vegas, Arizona, up the coast — as long as you tell us the plan in advance and keep the allowance in mind; it comes home to Los Angeles, since there is no one-way drop in another city.
What does a weekend in the Land Rover Defender cost, and can I rent it by the hour?
$658 for two days and $987 for three, before the Protection plan, tax and any delivery — there is no separate weekend rate, and one day is the minimum on a Saturday too. The day is the shortest self-drive booking; by the hour, the car goes out with a driver, from $100 an hour on a two-hour minimum.
