Renting in Los Angeles With No US Insurance: How Cover Works for Visitors
The short answer

You do not need an American insurance policy to rent a car in Los Angeles. Cover is required on every rental here: the Protection plan, or your own policy where it reaches. The plan is sold by the day, priced off the car’s security deposit, so a visitor with no US policy buys the same line in the quote as a Californian whose own policy falls short.

Four bands, from $50 a day at the bottom of the fleet to $225 a day at the top, the same figure for a guest from Milan as for one from Pasadena. Bring your home licence and your passport — no International Driving Permit is needed — a credit card in your own name, and be twenty-one with two years of history.

If you are visiting the US and have no American policy

The question arrives in almost the same words every time: I am visiting for a few days, my insurance is written in another country, can you cover the car. Yes. It is a priced line rather than a favour, the figure is set before you pay, and it is the same figure for a visitor as for anybody.

Cover itself is required on every booking, so the only question the booking form asks is whose policy provides it, and for most visitors the answer is the Protection plan in the quote. Two things get conflated here and are worth separating. One is the licence: whether California wants anything from you to drive here at all is a question for the state, set out on the DMV’s driver licence pages, and the answer is that a valid home-country licence is recognised.

The other is the cover, which is ours to sell and yours to buy by the day. The mechanic to hold on to is that the cover line is added to the quote before anything is committed: not at the handover, not as a percentage of the total, and it does not change once the booking is made.

The top band. The Urus and the whole flagship shelf carry cover at $225 a day, and the deposit sits at $1,500 or above.

What the cover costs, and why a deposit sets the price

Cover is charged for each day of the rental, and its price is decided by one number: the security deposit the car carries. Read the bands as thresholds rather than exact matches — a deposit sitting between two rows lands in the band above it, never the cheaper one — and read the middle column of the table as the whole of it. There is no separate international surcharge, no visitor rate, and no second policy sold on top.

One mechanic decides whether a longer trip helps. The rental line can get cheaper on a longer booking, because the price is the cheapest combination of the car’s daily, five-day and twenty-one-day figures. The Protection plan line is the per-day band multiplied by the days, on every day; where the price breaks has the rental side of that arithmetic.

The documents, in one block

Your home-country licence and your passport, together; we do not ask for an International Driving Permit, because California recognises a valid home licence and a permit is only a translation of one you already hold. A credit card in the primary renter’s name, because the deposit is a hold taken against it at handover, released 5–7 business days after the car is back, and a card in somebody else’s name does not work even if that person is standing next to you.

Twenty-one or over with two years of licence history, the same floor for everybody; between twenty-one and twenty-four a young-driver supplement is charged for each day, the lower tier on most of the fleet and the higher one where the car’s deposit is $1,500 or above. And every driver named on the agreement: a friend who takes a turn on the coast road and is not on it is not covered, whatever their licence says.

If you do have a policy at home, we will read it

Bringing your own is allowed and it removes the cover line from the quote entirely rather than discounting it. The test is narrow and it is the same test an American policy has to pass: collision and comprehensive rather than liability alone; a physical-damage limit that reaches the replacement value of the car you booked; territory that includes California; and a rental extension that is written down rather than assumed.

Whether a motor policy written outside the United States clears those four is a question for the company that wrote it, and it is worth asking in writing before you fly rather than by telephone from a hotel lobby. The Insurance Information Institute’s explainer sets out what a rental extension usually does and does not carry.

The sequence is short. You book, you pay for the rental, and the licence and the insurance are uploaded afterwards; we verify both before the car moves. If the home policy clears the test, the cover line comes off. If it does not, the daily plan is already in the quote and nothing else changes. Your policy or ours goes through the choice in detail, and what a premium card actually covers answers the question most visitors ask next.

What it costs, and how it reaches you

The Protection plan is the per-day band multiplied by the days and it sits in the quote before you pay; the deposit is a refundable hold by the car, back 5–7 business days after it returns. Most visitors land at LAX, where delivery is $150 both ways standard, where the car waits in the airport parking structure and a short shuttle takes you out to it; or $300 both ways VIP, where the car is waiting at the terminal when you walk out. A single direction is half of either.

Delivery to the partner hotels in Beverly Hills is complimentary and collection from our lot on Robertson Boulevard is free. Mileage, fuel and the rest are in the terms, and the whole fleet is on the fleet page.

The short version

No American policy needed. Cover is sold by the day off the car’s deposit band, the same four figures for everybody, and a home policy that genuinely reaches removes the line rather than discounting it. Home licence and passport, no IDP — California says so — a card in your own name, twenty-one with two years, every driver named.

Book, pay, upload the two documents, and we verify them before the car moves. The fleet, by band, is on the fleet page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a car in Los Angeles without US car insurance?

Nizo Luxury rents to visitors without one — +1 (424) 303-6496. Cover is required on every rental: the Protection plan, or your own policy where it reaches. The plan is sold by the day from $50, priced off the car's security deposit, so a visitor with no American policy buys the same line in the quote as anybody else. It is added before you pay, not at the handover, and there is no visitor rate or international surcharge.

How much does the rental insurance cost for a visitor?

The same as for everybody: four bands set by the car's deposit — $50 a day up to a $499 deposit, $75 at $500, $100 at $750, and $225 at $1,500 and above. A deposit between two rows lands in the band above. The cover line is charged for every day of the booking and does not shrink on a longer one.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in California?

No. California recognises a valid home-country licence, and a permit is only a translation of one you already hold. Bring the licence and your passport together; if you have a permit, bring it too, but it changes nothing.

Can I use my insurance from home instead?

If it passes the same test an American policy has to pass: collision and comprehensive rather than liability alone, a physical-damage limit that reaches the car's replacement value, territory that includes California, and a written rental extension. Ask the company that wrote it, in writing, before you fly. If it clears, the cover line comes off the quote entirely.

What documents does a visitor need to rent a car in Los Angeles?

Your home licence and passport together; a credit card in the primary renter's name, against which the refundable deposit is held and released 5–7 business days after return; proof of age — twenty-one or over with two years of licence history; and every driver who will take the wheel named on the agreement with their own documents.

Is there a young-driver charge for visitors?

The same as for anybody between twenty-one and twenty-four: a supplement charged for each day of the booking, at the lower tier on most of the fleet and the higher tier where the car's deposit is $1,500 or above. It is not a visitor charge; it is an age charge.
