Los Angeles · What the hold actually is
Security Deposit on a Car Rental in Los Angeles
Every rental here carries a refundable hold, from $350 to $2,000 depending on the car. It is an authorisation rather than a charge, it comes back 5–7 business days after a clean return, and you see the exact figure in writing before anything touches your card.

The bands, and what each one costs to cover
The deposit decides the cover: the Protection plan is priced off the hold rather than off the day rate, so a car in a higher band costs more to cover even when it rents for less than something below it.
| Deposit | Cover, per day | Cars | What is in the band |
|---|---|---|---|
| from $350 | $50 | 11 | The everyday shelf — three-row SUVs, compact crossovers, the minivans |
| from $500 | $75 | 21 | Saloons and the larger SUVs — the BMWs, the Mercedes, the Wrangler |
| from $750 | $100 | 25 | Performance — the Corvettes, the RS 3, the Boxster, the Range Rover Sport |
| from $1,500 | $225 | 7 | The Urus |
| from $2,000 | $225 | 15 | Exotics and flagships — Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Maybach |
These are the standard holds. The one for your booking is confirmed to you before you commit.
Three things to know about the hold
It is a hold, not a payment. The amount is authorised against the primary renter’s card at pickup and never moves. It does not show up as a charge, and releasing it is not a refund — the authorisation simply drops off.
It is released 5–7 business days after a clean return. Ask us and we will tell you the day it was released. Where something has to be priced first, the timing changes, and the next section says how.
The exact figure is in the quote before any money moves. Rate, cover, deposit and delivery arrive as one written number. Nothing is authorised against a card until you have seen all four and said yes.
Renting without a deposit
There is a deposit-free way to rent, quoted on request: instead of the refundable authorisation you pay a small non-refundable fee for each day of the rental, set against what the hold would have been, and nothing is held against your card at all. It is not offered in the booking form, so ask when you enquire and you get both totals side by side. It suits the booking where the credit line matters more than the price; for most people the hold is cheaper, because it comes back.
When there is damage: what comes off the hold, and how long it takes
Damage, excessive cleaning and mileage overage are assessed at return, photographed, and deducted from the hold before the rest is released — the same walk-around that recorded the car at handover records it at the end. Minor damage that sits inside the deposit takes about two weeks to finalise: the repair has to be priced, a body-shop appointment found and the work seen before the figure is final. Where the damage is more serious, allow up to a month. A collision waits on the police report and the insurers before the final invoice is issued.
Throughout it you get the paperwork rather than a status: estimates, invoices, photographs and the body shop’s own documentation, as they arrive, so you can see what is being charged and why before anything is settled. Whether the charge stops at the deposit depends on the cover on the booking — the Protection plan, or your own policy — and the protection plans and damage hub sets out which pays for what. For a wedding, confetti, champagne and the wedding car deposit covers keeping the car, and the deposit, clean.
What is a normal deposit, and where ours sits
Ours runs from $350 on the everyday shelf to $2,000 on the exotics and flagships, by the bands above. Across Los Angeles the hold on a supercar runs from about a thousand dollars to several thousand, set by the car rather than by the company’s size. A Huracán and a Rolls-Royce take the same hold, from $2,000; the Urus, from $1,500, is the one Lamborghini below it. The chain-versus-boutique comparison, deposit row included, is in Hertz luxury rentals against an exotic fleet.

Deposit Questions
How big is the security deposit on an exotic rental in Los Angeles?
Nizo Luxury holds from $2,000 on the exotics and flagships and from $350 at the other end of the fleet — +1 (424) 303-6496. The full table is on this page, by band. These are the standard holds; the one for your booking is confirmed to you before you commit.
Is the deposit charged to my card?
No. It is an authorisation on the primary renter’s card, taken at pickup — the money is reserved against the card and not moved. That is why it does not appear as a payment and why releasing it is not a refund: the hold simply drops.
When do I get the deposit back?
It is released 5–7 business days after a clean return. With damage to price, the timing follows the repair: about two weeks for minor damage inside the deposit, up to a month for anything serious, and where a collision involves a police report or an insurer, until their process is complete — the section on this page says what happens in between.
Does the deposit change what the protection plan costs?
Yes, and it is the one connection most people are not expecting: our Protection plan is priced off the deposit band rather than off the day rate. So the same car at the same rate would cost the same per day to cover as anything else in its band — and a car two bands up costs more to cover even if it rents for less. The per-day figure for each band is in the table above, and your own qualifying full-coverage policy takes that line out of the quote entirely.
Can I rent without a deposit at all?
Yes, on request. Instead of the refundable hold you pay a small non-refundable fee for each day of the rental, set against what the hold would have been, and nothing is authorised against your card. It is not part of the online booking flow, so ask for it when you enquire and both totals come back together. It is worth asking for when the hold is the awkward part rather than the price: a $2,000 authorisation ties up a real line of credit for the rental and several days after it.
Will I know the exact figure before I pay anything?
Yes. The deposit is in the written quote with the rate, the cover and any delivery, and nothing is held against a card until you have all of it in front of you.
