Rear Engined

Yellow Porsche 911

The engine is behind the back axle, where nobody else has dared put one, and it has been the right answer for sixty years.

Every other sports car in this city is described by how close it gets to this one.

A flat-six hung out behind the rear axle is an engineering decision no rival copied and Porsche never abandoned. What it buys is traction out of a corner and a shape that has not needed redrawing since the sixties — and, less famously, a supercar you can drive to dinner without an argument.

Yellow Porsche 911 on a canyon road above Los Angeles at dusk
01Stopped above the city at dusk. The lamps are the only round things left on most cars in this class; here they are still the face.

What surprises people who have not driven one is how ordinary it is at ordinary speeds. It is narrower than most of the SUVs in this fleet, the visibility out of it is genuinely good, the ride is civilised over a patched Los Angeles surface, and the boot in the nose takes two weekend bags. None of that is what a 911 is famous for, and all of it is why people who own one use it every day.

Then Mulholland empties out and the other half of the car arrives. The weight sits behind you, the rear tyres dig in rather than washing wide, and the whole thing tightens up in a way that reads as confidence rather than drama.

Sixty years of putting the engine
in the wrong place, correctly.

Queries

Where can I rent a Porsche 911 in Los Angeles?
Nizo Luxury rents the Porsche 911 in Los Angeles — +1 (424) 303-6496. It is $550 a day; we bring it to your hotel or your home, or you collect it at no charge from our office on Robertson Boulevard.
How much does it cost to rent a Porsche 911 in Los Angeles?
The yellow 911 is $550 a day. A shorter booking is priced day by day; the saving on this car arrives at the twenty-one-day block, which the quote applies for you. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary.
Is it difficult to drive if I have never driven a 911?
It is the least intimidating fast car we let. The gearbox does everything in traffic, the visibility is good, and it is narrower than most of our SUVs. The character only shows up when you go looking for it.
How many people fit, and where does luggage go?
Two comfortably, with two small rear seats behind that suit bags or a short hop with children. The boot is in the nose and takes two soft weekend cases. For four adults and their luggage, ask about the BMW 7 or the Bentley Bentayga.
Can I see the dates before I call?
Yes — the diary on this page is the live fleet calendar. If a date is open there, it is open.

Renting the Porsche 911: the short answers

Can I book the Porsche 911 with a driver?
Yes. A chauffeur is from $100 an hour on a two-hour minimum, added to the car at its day rate — $950 for a four-hour evening in this car. No security deposit is taken on a chauffeured booking. The same car can be driven to the event and yours with the keys the morning after; the chauffeur service page has the runs and the hours.
What do I need to rent the Porsche 911, and can international guests book?
A driver of 21 or over with a licence held at least two years — between 21 and 24 a young-driver fee of $175 a day applies on this car, and under 21 is considered case by case. A major credit card in the primary renter's name for the refundable hold, and cover for the car: your own full-coverage policy if it extends to a rental, or our Protection plan arranged with the booking. International guests rent on a passport and a home-country licence; no International Driving Permit is needed. The hold is released 5–7 business days after a clean return, longer only if there is damage to price. If the age floor or the cover is the thing in the way, the same car goes out with a driver instead — that booking asks neither of you.
How far ahead should I book the Porsche 911, and can I change the dates?
There is no notice period: the calendar on this page shows the days it is free, and once a booking is paid a car that is free can be on its way to you in about an hour — same day included. Moving the dates is free, as often as you need, outside the last day before the start; a change inside it keeps one day's rate. What comes back if you cancel is set out in our terms and conditions.
Can the Porsche 911 be delivered to my hotel, my home or LAX?
Yes. Delivery is complimentary to the Beverly Wilshire, the Four Seasons at Doheny, L’Ermitage and the Maybourne, and collection from our Robertson Boulevard office costs nothing. LAX is $150 both ways with the car in the airport parking structure or $300 both ways to the terminal, half that for one direction. Any other address is priced by distance from the office, $75 one way inside 10 miles, and itemised on the quote before you pay.
How many miles are included, and can I take the Porsche 911 out of California?
Every car carries its own daily mileage allowance, and yours arrives in writing with the booking confirmation, together with the per-mile rate for anything over it. The car may leave the state — Las Vegas, Arizona, up the coast — as long as you tell us the plan in advance and keep the allowance in mind; it comes home to Los Angeles, since there is no one-way drop in another city.
What does a weekend in the Porsche 911 cost, and can I rent it by the hour?
$1,100 for two days and $1,650 for three, before the Protection plan, tax and any delivery — there is no separate weekend rate, and one day is the minimum on a Saturday too. The day is the shortest self-drive booking; by the hour, the car goes out with a driver, from $100 an hour on a two-hour minimum.
