Engine In The Middle

Blue Porsche 718 Cayman

The engine sits behind the seats and in front of the back axle, which is where every racing car has put it for sixty years.

It is the sharpest-steering car in this fleet, and it is not the most expensive one.

A mid-engined car turns in differently and everybody notices it within a mile. The mass is between the axles rather than hanging off one end, so the nose goes where it is pointed without the delay a front-engined car has, and the whole thing changes direction as one piece. The 718 is the cheapest way into that in Los Angeles.

01Above the Pacific at golden hour. The twin pipes exit in the centre, which is where an engine in the middle puts them.

The practical surprise is the luggage. There is a boot behind the engine and another under the bonnet, and between them they take more than a 911 will — a mid-engined two-seater turns out to be the most usable shape for a week of hand luggage and camera bags. The ride is firm and it is painless in traffic, in a way its lap times do not suggest.

This is the bright saturated blue Porsche keeps for the cars it wants remembered, over gold-finished wheels and yellow calipers. On a coast road at the right hour it is one of the strongest colour combinations in the fleet.

Queries

Where can I rent a Porsche 718 Cayman in Los Angeles?
Nizo Luxury rents the Porsche 718 Cayman in Los Angeles — +1 (424) 303-6496. It is $329 a day; we bring it to your hotel or your home, or you collect it at no charge from our office on Robertson Boulevard.
How much does it cost to rent a Porsche 718 Cayman in Los Angeles?
The blue Cayman is $329 a day. The day rate is the whole of it on this car — there is no weekly or monthly block, so a longer booking is priced day by day. Delivery to our Beverly Hills partner hotels is complimentary.
What is the difference between the Cayman and the Boxster?
The roof. They are the same mid-engined car; the Cayman has a fixed one and the Boxster does not. The Cayman is marginally the sharper of the two and it has more luggage space. If you want open air, ask about the Boxster and we will point you straight at it.
Is there anywhere to put luggage in a two-seater?
More than you would expect. There is a boot under the bonnet and a second one behind the engine, and together they take more than a 911 does. Two soft weekend cases and a camera bag is comfortable.
How is it in LA traffic?
No. The ride is firm and you know it is a sports car, but it is genuinely painless on Santa Monica Boulevard at five o'clock — which is not something every car in this bracket can claim.
Can I see the dates before I call?
Yes — the diary on this page is the live fleet calendar. If a date is open there, it is open.

The terms, before you commit

Refundable deposit
$750
A hold, not a charge, and released 5–7 business days after a clean return, longer only if there is damage to price.
Protection plan
$100 a day
Priced off the deposit rather than the rate. Your own qualifying full-coverage policy takes this line out of the quote entirely.
Driver, 21–24
$50 a day
Twenty-one is the floor, with a licence held two years. The higher band applies at or above a $1,500 deposit; this car is below it.
Shortest booking
24 hours
No maximum. Delivery is complimentary at our Robertson Boulevard lot and our four Beverly Hills partner hotels; LAX is $150 both ways with the car in the airport parking structure or $300 both ways to the terminal, half that for one direction.

This one is the same rate at every length — it carries no multi-day block, so three days is three times one day.

Renting the Porsche 718 Cayman: the short answers

Can I book the Porsche 718 Cayman with a driver?
Yes. A chauffeur is from $100 an hour on a two-hour minimum, added to the car at its day rate — $729 for a four-hour evening in this car. No security deposit is taken on a chauffeured booking. The same car can be driven to the event and yours with the keys the morning after; the chauffeur service page has the runs and the hours.
What do I need to rent the Porsche 718 Cayman, and can international guests book?
A driver of 21 or over with a licence held at least two years — between 21 and 24 a young-driver fee of $50 a day applies on this car, and under 21 is considered case by case. A major credit card in the primary renter's name for the refundable hold, and cover for the car: your own full-coverage policy if it extends to a rental, or our Protection plan arranged with the booking. International guests rent on a passport and a home-country licence; no International Driving Permit is needed. The hold is released 5–7 business days after a clean return, longer only if there is damage to price. If the age floor or the cover is the thing in the way, the same car goes out with a driver instead — that booking asks neither of you.
How far ahead should I book the Porsche 718 Cayman, and can I change the dates?
There is no notice period: the calendar on this page shows the days it is free, and once a booking is paid a car that is free can be on its way to you in about an hour — same day included. Moving the dates is free, as often as you need, outside the last day before the start; a change inside it keeps one day's rate. What comes back if you cancel is set out in our terms and conditions.
Can the Porsche 718 Cayman be delivered to my hotel, my home or LAX?
Yes. Delivery is complimentary to the Beverly Wilshire, the Four Seasons at Doheny, L’Ermitage and the Maybourne, and collection from our Robertson Boulevard office costs nothing. LAX is $150 both ways with the car in the airport parking structure or $300 both ways to the terminal, half that for one direction. Any other address is priced by distance from the office, $75 one way inside 10 miles, and itemised on the quote before you pay.
How many miles are included, and can I take the Porsche 718 Cayman out of California?
Every car carries its own daily mileage allowance, and yours arrives in writing with the booking confirmation, together with the per-mile rate for anything over it. The car may leave the state — Las Vegas, Arizona, up the coast — as long as you tell us the plan in advance and keep the allowance in mind; it comes home to Los Angeles, since there is no one-way drop in another city.
What does a weekend in the Porsche 718 Cayman cost, and can I rent it by the hour?
$658 for two days and $987 for three, before the Protection plan, tax and any delivery — there is no separate weekend rate, and one day is the minimum on a Saturday too. The day is the shortest self-drive booking; by the hour, the car goes out with a driver, from $100 an hour on a two-hour minimum.
